Weddings
Wedding by Banns

Currently 22% of weddings take place in the Church of England.  Yet 53% of people think church weddings are "more proper"

54% of couples would like a church wedding, either because they would like to make their commitment "before God"  or because they would like a "traditional" wedding. But many couples assume it is not an option for them. Since October 1st 2008 however the rules have been relaxed and the following now stands. (source: Church Times)

For a wedding by Banns one of the following must apply:

  • Both parties have British citizenship
  • One party is resident in St. Giles with St. Matthew parish (Click 2 below for a map) or has regularly worshipped at one of these churches for 6 months and joined the Electoral Roll.
  • One of the parties was baptised in the parish
  • One was prepared for confirmation in the parish
  • One of them has at any time lived in the parish for at least 6 months
  • One of them at any time has regularly attended normal church services in the parish for at least 6 months
  • One of their parents has lived in the parish for at least 6 months (in the bride/bridegrooms lifetime)
  • One of their parents has regularly attended normal church services in the parish for at least six months (in the bride/bridegrooms lifetime)
  • One of their parents or grandparents was married in the parish

If none of the above applies a couple can still marry in St. Giles or St. Matthew's church by special licence.

It is also possible to marry divorcees who qualify as above but you must first contact the vicar for a discussion.

More information at www.cofe.anglican.org/marriagemeasure and www.yourchurchwedding.org

Please pick up a wedding enquiry form from the church after the main Sunday service (10am at St. Giles or 11am at St. Matthew).

Wedding by Licence

To be married by licence you have to obtain a licence from the Surrogate who is another local Vicar authorised by the Bishop. This person is trained in the legal requirements and will advise you. However the following is given as guidance.

  • If either of you are a foreign national (that means not British or a European Union Citizen) you will need either ‘Indefinite Leave to remain’, or a ‘certificate of Approval to Marry’ from The Home Office
  • You can find out about ‘Certificate of Approval to Marry’ from the Home Office Website http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/applicationforms/coa/coa

You will need

  • Both Passports
  • Proof of Address (Council Tax Bill, Rent Book or Child Benefit Statemant. Utility Bills not acceptable)
  • Original Decree Absolute if one or both have been divorced.
  • Certified Translation of any documents not in English

Firstly both parties to the marriage must apply to the church they wish to marry in (0207 703 4504). They must both attend a meeting with the Vicar. The Vicar will check documents before recommending you to the Surrogate.

Note especially this process will take at least 12 weeks.

As a start please attend the Main service (10am at St. Giles; 11am at St. Mathews) and ask for the enquiry form.
